Apple has smooth and light skin with a clear and firm color and without blemishes and has a suitable weight of high quality and is considered as one of the most important factors in determining its quality.
In northern Iran, there is a suitable climate for growing apples.
Urmia, Semirom, Damavand, Mianeh, and Maragheh are the main cities which produce apples.
Iranian Apple Customers
Many neighboring countries maximally purchase exportation apples from Iran; however, some countries such as Iraq have a higher share than the others.
Another main importer of Iranian apples is Russia, which annually purchases large tonnages of apples from Iran.
India, Pakistan, Oman, Qatar, and Egypt are also among the importers of Iranian apples.
Types of Apple
Climatic diversity has led to the cultivation of various varieties of apples in the country.
Among the most important apple cultivars, we can mention cultivars such as “Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Barabarn, Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, all kinds of Golab, etc.” According to the harvest time, the types of apples produced in Iran are divided into two groups (spring and summer) and autumn.
The amount of production of spring-summer apple cultivars was 516,498 tons, which is about 14% of total apple production.
Production of autumn cultivars (Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, etc.) was 3,180,200 tons, which accounted for more than 86 percent of total apple production.
Apple Harvest Season
Apple picking time is one of the most important parameters determining the quality of export apples.
Due to the diversity of climatic conditions and the diversity of cultivars, the time of apple harvest is very different in different parts of the country, but the harvest of spring and summer apples, which are mainly consumed fresh in the domestic market, begins in early June and it will continue until the end of August.
The harvest time of autumn apples starts from the beginning of September and continues until the end of November.
It should be noted that Iran’s export apples are mainly autumn varieties (Red and Golden Delicious).
